CPython deallocates objects immediately when their reference counter (ob_refcnt) drops to 0. A secondary generational cyclic garbage collector periodically sweeps circular references (Object A -> Object B -> Object A).
“Reference counting is checking out library books: the moment nobody is reading it, it returns to the shelf. Cyclic GC is a detective tracking a group of friends who each borrowed a book from the person to their left and forgot to return it.”
Accidentally retaining tensors in computation graphs by assigning loss or activation tensors directly to persistent class instances without calling .detach() or .item(), triggering VRAM/RAM memory leaks.
import sys, gc
# Inspecting reference counts
a = [1, 2, 3]
print("Ref count:", sys.getrefcount(a) - 1) # 1
# Disabling cyclic GC during high-throughput inference passes to prevent latency jitter:
gc.disable()
# ... run high-throughput batch generation ...
